The National Refuse Championships is returning to Weston-super-Mare on Friday 15 & Saturday 16 June 2018, and promises to be even bigger and better than last year’s event.
The first ever National Refuse Championships took place in June 2017 at Weston-super-Mare where over 100 refuse vehicle drivers and loaders from across the UK gathered to compete in a series of races. Over £12000 was raised for The Alzheimer’s Society and Aylesbury Vale District Council won the title of National Refuse Champions. Such was the success of the day that the organisers, Refuse Vehicle Solutions Ltd (RVS), have decided to make it an annual event.
Volvo Cars, the premium car maker, today launched its new three-cylinder Drive-E powertrain in the XC40, the company's first entry into the compact SUV segment. The new powertrain is the first three-cylinder engine in the company's 91-year history.
The all-new 1.5-litre, three-cylinder, direct-injection petrol engine was developed in-house using the same modular design as Volvo's four-cylinder Drive-E engines. The three-cylinder powertrain (badged T3) comes with a six-speed manual transmission. An optional eight-speed automatic transmission will follow next year. In line with Volvo Cars' strategy to continue improving economies of scale, the engine will roll off the same production lines as the company's four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines.
"Our new three-cylinder engine is an exciting development for the XC40 and for Volvo Cars in general," said Alexander Petrofski, Senior Director Cluster 40 at Volvo Cars. "This compact engine design provides the flexibility we need as we introduce more powertrain options for XC40 customers."

Kwik Fit has regained the contract to exclusively supply a range of tyre-related services to British Gas, which operates one of the UK’s largest owner fleets.
The three-year contract, which is now live, sees the UK’s largest automotive repair company deliver tyre repair and replacement, tyre management, authorisation and invoicing and tyre safety checks on the 12,500-strong British Gas liveried van fleet.
The sole supply contract is one of Kwik Fit’s largest to an end-user fleet and has been regained after a 10-year partnership was interrupted three years ago.
Critical to Kwik Fit regaining the business was its nationwide Mobile tyre fitting service with British Gas focused on ensuring vehicle downtime is kept to an absolute minimum. The vans are driven by engineers and energy experts who provide a range of services, including installing and servicing domestic boilers and help and advice on energy efficiency products such as insulation and smart meters.
