Leading multi-disciplined engineering and construction company J. Murphy & Sons Limited is one of just 16 companies to successfully achieve Gold Status from Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) run by Transport for London (TfL).
FORS is an industry-led voluntary scheme for fleet operators whose purpose it is to raise the level of quality and performance within fleet operations.
Murphy progression from silver to gold membership was awarded through demonstrating self-improvement and best practice in fleet operations.
The company achieved significant fleet emission reductions. Fuel use in the UK of fleet vehicles is currently 9% less per million pound turnover compared to 2012. In addition, Murphy achieved a considerable reduction in accident and transport related charges of 43%, as well as, significant safety and sustainability improvements.
This was supported by a bespoke training for managers and operators to ensure they possess a greater knowledge and understanding of safe and efficient fleet operation such as vehicle idling, driver verification and driver fitness and health.
A further key development was fitting all Murphy HGV vehicles with close proximity safety equipment such as sidescan detection cameras and warning systems. Taking further measures towards cyclist safety, Murphy introduced a Safe Urban Driving course to provide practical on-road cycle training. Encouraging drivers to ride a bicycle and get a cyclists view of the road gave drivers the opportunity to experience firsthand the changing streetscape and urban environment and learn to recognise the hazard faced by vulnerable road users.
Brendan Sugrue, London Regional Plant & Transport Manager said “Attaining gold status demonstrates our commitment to continuously improving our practices in order to to sustain the highest standards of freight operations. Our commitment to purchasing the latest technology and safety equipment is complemented by our £6.5m spending on training this year alone to ensure continual investment in the skills of our workforce.
“Being a FORS member has given us the platform to benchmark and measure our performance within the industry, as well as, continuously identify areas where further improvement could be made.”
